Ishanchandra’s son Pareshnath Banerji (1891-1971) imbibed the values of both his father and his illustrious uncle, and himself became a legend.

A serious student of chemistry and homeopathy both before and after his graduation, Pareshnath, like his father and uncle, became well known for his commitment to serving the poor.

in 1918, he based himself at Mihijam, not too far away from Karmatar, where he invented Lexin – a drug for treating snakebites, the use of which became widespread in and outside India, and earned him enough money to meet not only the needs of his family, but also to offer free treatment and medicines to the thousands of poor people who came to him, many of them also being served food cooked in the Banerji kitchen!

Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar spent the last 18 years of his life from 1873 to 1891 at Karmatanr, now in Jharkhand, which is about 57 kilometres from Asansol on the main line of the Asansol – Sitarampur – Jasidih – Patna route of the Eastern Railway. Lying between Madhupur and Jamtara, Karmatanr’s railway station now bears his name – ‘Vidyasagar’.

Even though he was one of the legendary figures of the 19th-century Bengal renaissance as a social reformer, educationist, humanitarian and philanthropist, his life in Kolkata had been full of stresses and strains… with the society’s opposition to his endeavours aimed at the well-being of women causing the greatest distress. Moreover, there was a breakdown in his health too, following a serious liver injury sustained in 1866 in a horse carriage accident. He wanted to retire to some place outside Kolkata where he could rest, live in solitude and get mental peace, and wrote about his decision to all his near and dear ones.

Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar (1820 – 1891) was one of the legendary figures of the 19th century Bengal renaissance, as an academist, social reformer, humanitarian and philanthropist. It has been impossible to properly assess his greatness, and the importance of his achievements.

At a time when Pandit Vidyasagar’s 200th birth anniversary is being celebrated, it would be interesting to point out that he played a pioneering role in the development of the practice of homeopathy as a system of medical treatment as well.

Sometime in the 1850s, Pandit Vidyasagar suffered from migraine, and was successfully treated with homeopathic medicines prescribed by his friend and well-wisher Rajendralal Dutta after conventional medicines had failed. Rajendralal Dutta’s earlier successes with other patients were followed by his and Pandit Vidyasagar’s interactions with the well-known Dr. Mahendralal Sircar, who belonged to the conventional system of medical treatment and never believed in homeopathy. These interactions led to the ‘conversion’ of Dr. Sircar who switched over to homeopathy, with a number of other allopathic practitioners following his lead.

As one of the legendary figures of the 19th century Bengal renaissance, Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar (1820 – 1891) is best known for his remarkable achievements in the spheres of academics and social reform. On the one hand, his vast erudition and analytical brilliance helped him develop the right perspectives for an educationist and a social reformer; on the other, his qualities of head and heart helped him become a humanist and a philanthropist.

All these qualities also found reflection in something about which Pandit Vidyasagar is not too well known – his pioneering role in the development of homeopathy as a system of medical treatment, mainly for the benefit of people of small means and others unable to bear the high costs of conventional medical treatment.

Historically, Homeopathy has an excellent track record in the treatments of Epidemics / Pandemics. Homeopathic medicines are safe to use and we can expect very little, if any, side-effects as can be experienced by using other systems of medicine.
